Namers and Describers

Help! I need suggestions on names for my sci-fi worlds. I am torn between names that sound interesting and names that imply interesting meanings…and the perfect name would be subtle implications of the type of society with a real neat ring spoken and neat look written.

Planet of egalitarian people – no privileged people, no status tied to achievement or success in competition, loosely organized by agreeing to the planet’s social contract with the option to take a set amount of money offworld in order to opt out of said social contract

Planet of competitive people – fairly American standard (not the toilets), corporate ethos used in running everything, status is based on how large one’s influence is as measured by money and position

Planet of orthodox religious people – ruled by divine right, decided by council of elders led by specially chosen elder, differences in status are explained through language of morality – the worthy vs the unworthy

Don’t worry, it won’t be as simplistic as it sounds.

  1. “Dolores, I live in fear my love for you is so overpowering that I’m afraid that I will disappear” P.S.
Dolores is the perfect planet to enslave your guilt!

  2. Perfect!

Now I’d like a good word for “Profit”. Something that says or implies the primacy of profit motive. Something that asserts profit as a human need and the striving for profit as a human good.

    1. “Stone burner”?

      Hmm.

So far I’m going with Market, though I would like a more evocative word. And my egalitarian society is Dissid or Solidarity…

    1. Oh – I really like that! It’s a nice looking word…I’ll have to refresh myself on his actual politics beyond the solidarity motto…grin…

  3. I’m totally in agreement with Da ” James”. Walesa is a guy who was or possibly still is a worker. He stood up for what is a common mans dream of making a difference in this world. Who could ask for more? Love you guy’s … Stay warm
    Aloha.

  4. It’d be kinda fun to play with Ayn Rand’s name, for the competitive planet…
I got nothin’ else, but interested to hear what you come up with!

    1. Oooooh – I like that a lot. Then I just get to pick based on additional subtext – name it Rand for simplicity, or maybe Dominique in reference to the Fountainhead’s heroine, who seems to float toward whatever man is “winning”, or maybe Galt from Atlas Shrugged.

Or Amphetamine, for the chemical that kept a driven person going past their own limits and dropped that person into a long, hard depression. Oh, the pressures on individuals when trying to follow Objectivism…even when of their own devising.

Nah – not poetic enough. Grin. I do like Rand, though – gets across the idea that it’s not just an economic goal being sought by those shaping the planet.
