The rule of thumb…

…Here in Akkulam is; Honk first, then enter traffic as fast as you can, looking both ways only after reaching break-neck speed. This rule is especially important if you have more than 6 people on your scooter or a boat on top of your minivan.

Poovar and Prakash

Prakash came to visit! He’s the friend who owns the apartment we’re using here in Akkulam and we had a grand time. The day after he arrived we went for a nice, gentle, post-party trip to the resort area of Poovar. The Neyyar River joins the Arabian Sea there most of the time, though the usual sand bar had turned into a full on sand dune. The host-type guy said the sand was all washed away during monsoon but built up when the rains stopped. The government dredges it occasionally in the dry seasons. We took a boat ride through the backwaters and down the river, back to the island resort. Our boat wasn’t as old-fashioned and charming as this one, but the driver helped us get good looks at kingfishers, egrets, and more. Light and lenses made them hard to photograph. We must have passed a boat builder somewhere along the way, because this transpo startled us on the way back to TVM. The party-hearty weekend left James and I ready to get back to work on Indoor Boh. Speaking of which…back to it!

We’re in this world

The planet Earth is a strange and wonderful place, as a matter of fact… Real fact, not just the matter concerning facts but, yes, the facts of the matter are thus, it’s the only place we (has humans) know… or think we know, anyway… It’s a cool place for us. This past week we went to Kovalam, Kerala which is kind of a bum-fuck tourist village with lots of half neked euro-slobs hanging about spending lots of money and treating the locals like second-classers but we didn’t go there for that, we went there for the ride. Yes, we rode our bikes there, a 28km round trip through all the environs that Kerala has to offer and it was an incredible ride, in every sence of the word incredible! We made our way along the coast and we got the most amazing greatings from almost every single person we came within a few feet from. Both of us had the sore-mouth-grins and by the time we got to Vizhinjam, the little fishing village on the south side of Kovalam, we felt like we’d said hello to a huge portion of the South Hindustani population. We stayed the night at the state run tourist guest-house, ate 3 wonderful meals, got back on the bikes and rode back to Akkulam… That’s it, just a beautiful time in a wonderful place.

Indoor Boh, Underway

A few thousand words in, I’m getting excited about this new book. James and I have been tossing the concept around for months, but it’s at my favorite phase right now – enough words on the screen that I have started to see how the pieces are going to be stitched together. The connective tissue is developing along with the sentences and it makes me glow.
